I believe the university authorities should seriously think about opening manuscript studies departments. Our universities have so many departments but we don’t have any dedicated department for studying manuscripts. That’s why we see little interest among students about learning the craft of reading old manuscripts. Why would a student take the trouble of learning to read old manuscripts for only ten marks? In Bangladesh there is very little study of old Bengali manuscripts today.

But only a week after Alivardi had marched out of Cuttack in June 1749, the Marathas under Mir Habib defeated and captured Alivardi’s agent. For example, a comprehensive story of Bengali prose is yet to be written.

Since his childhood he had been attracted to folk songs. His wife, Mira Devi, and only son, Rahul Dev Burman, were also well-known music personalities in the Mumbai film world. Early in the morning of 27 September 1742 the nawab’s troops made a surprise charge upon the sleeping Maratha camp of Bhaskar Pandit at Katwa; the Marathas fled, leaving behind all their camp and baggage.
